At Whatcom Center for Early Learning, our mission is to partner with families to provide high-quality, equitable, and comprehensive therapy and support services to children experiencing developmental delays and disabilities. The belief that every child deserves a stable and supportive family environment to thrive is central to our mission. Family unity is crucial to the well-being and development of children, and we are deeply concerned about the harmful impacts of current immigration policies.
These policies, which may result in family separation, have long-lasting consequences on children’s emotional, social, and cognitive development. Research shows that trauma caused by family separation dramatically increases the risk of developmental delays, emotional distress, and other lifelong challenges.
We are committed to ensuring that our work supports families in staying united and strong. When families are kept together, children have the consistent care and emotional support they need to thrive. We are dedicated to creating an environment where families feel safe and welcome to seek the services and support they need.
Our goal is to ensure that every child receives the care and resources necessary for their development, regardless of their family’s immigration status.
As we continue to provide services, we encourage families to have a family preparedness plan in place, including identifying trusted adults who can care for their children if needed. Having a plan in place can provide peace of mind and help families feel more confident and secure.
How You Can Take Action:
Advocate for Change: Reach out to your local and state representatives to express your support for immigrant families and urge them to protect family unity. Advocate for policies that ensure access to essential services for all children, regardless of their immigration status.
Support Local Organizations: There are several organizations in Whatcom County and Washington State that work to protect immigrant families and provide legal assistance. Consider donating time, resources, or funds to these organizations that are actively fighting for justice and equity. Some local organizations to consider supporting include:
Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship (BUF): Provides sanctuary and support for immigrants and refugees in the community. https://buf.org
Immigrant Resources and Immediate Support (IRIS): Supporting basic human needs for immigrant families in Whatcom and Skagit County. https://irisnw.org
Lutheran Community Services Northwest: Offers support for immigrants, refugees, and those in need of legal services in Whatcom County. https://lcsnw.org/whatcom
Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP): Provides legal services and advocacy for immigrants in Whatcom County and beyond. https://www.nwirp.org
Whatcom Immigrant Solidarity Network (WISN): Works to support immigrant families in Whatcom County and provides resources and advocacy. https://www.waisn.org
Stay Informed and Share Resources: Help raise awareness by sharing resources about immigrant rights, including information on how families can protect themselves. Educate others on the impact of family separation and the importance of keeping families together.
Get Involved Locally: Attend community meetings and town halls that discuss immigration policy. Get involved with local advocacy efforts that aim to protect immigrant rights and keep families united. Look for meetings hosted by local advocacy organizations, such as WISN or NWIRP, to stay engaged.
Support Immigrant Families Directly: If you know immigrant families in your community, offer your support. Whether it's providing resources, offering emotional support, or helping them connect with legal resources, your direct involvement can make a difference.
We are all in this together, and by taking action, we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of children and families who need it most.
Whatcom Center for Early Learning stands firm in its commitment to family unity. We will continue to advocate for policies that protect children and their families, and work to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive in a loving and supportive environment.
